Introduction
Changing your Steuerklasse in Germany is a straightforward process — but the timing rules catch many people out. This guide covers who can change, when you can change, the deadlines that matter, and exactly how to do it via Elster or your local Finanzamt.
When can you change your tax class?
Every employee in Germany can change their Steuerklasse voluntarily once per calendar year. You do not need to give a reason. Whether you want to increase your monthly take-home pay, prepare for Elterngeld (parental allowance), or simply correct a class that no longer reflects your situation — one voluntary change per year is yours to make.
The once-per-year limit applies to voluntary changes only. If your life circumstances change, the rules are more generous.
Life events that allow additional changes
Each qualifying life event entitles you to an additional tax class change, separate from your voluntary annual change. There is no cap — if two life events occur in the same year, you can change twice on top of your voluntary change. The events that qualify are:
- Marriage — you and your spouse can move from Class I to Class III/V or Class IV/IV
- Permanent separation — you can move from Class III or V back to Class I
- Death of a spouse — the surviving spouse is automatically placed in Class III for the remainder of the year, then moves to Class I the following year
- Spouse starts employment — a new income in the household may make a different combination more beneficial
- Spouse stops employment — if your spouse leaves work, the Class III/V split may no longer make sense
Each change tied to a life event requires you to inform the Finanzamt of the event and when it occurred.
Deadlines you must know before you apply
Two deadlines govern when your tax class change actually takes effect. Missing either one means waiting longer than planned.
The monthly deadline
A tax class change takes effect from the first day of the month after you submit your application. It does not apply retroactively to the month you submit in.
Priya wants her new tax class to show on her April payslip. She submits her application on 3 April. The change is processed — but it only takes effect from 1 May. Her April payslip still shows the old class. To have caught April, she needed to submit by 31 March.
The rule is simple: submit before the 1st of the month you want the change to start.
The 30 November deadline
Any change submitted after 30 November cannot take effect within the current calendar year. It will only be applied from 1 January of the following year.
James submits a tax class change on 10 December. Even though the Finanzamt processes it quickly, it cannot take effect until 1 January. Had he submitted by 30 November, the new class would have applied from 1 December.
How to change your tax class via Elster
Elster is the official German tax portal and the fastest route. You will need an Elster account — if you do not have one, allow a few days for registration as an activation letter arrives by post.
- Go to elster.de and log in
- Navigate to Formulare & Leistungen → Alle Formulare
- Search for „Erklärung zum Steuerklassenwechsel bei Ehegatten/Lebenspartnern”
- Enter your personal details, current tax class, and the class you are applying for
- If applying due to a life event, state the event and the date it occurred
- Submit electronically — you will receive a confirmation number
- The Finanzamt updates your ELStAM record — your employer retrieves the new class automatically at the next payroll run
Processing typically takes two to four weeks. Factor this in when working to the monthly deadline above.
How to change your tax class at the Finanzamt
If you do not have an Elster account or prefer to go in person, visit your local Finanzamt directly.
- Find your responsible Finanzamt — this is the office for the district where you are registered (Meldeadresse)
- Request the form „Antrag auf Steuerklassenwechsel” at the counter, or download it from your state tax authority’s website in advance
- Bring your ID or passport, your Steuer-ID (tax identification number), and any documents relating to a life event if applicable
- Submit the completed form — the Finanzamt updates your ELStAM record and your employer picks up the change automatically
Some Finanzämter require an appointment (Termin) — check your local office’s website before visiting.
What happens after you apply
Once submitted, you do not need to contact your employer. The change flows through the ELStAM system and your employer’s payroll software picks it up automatically on the next payroll run.
Check your next payslip to confirm the correct class is showing. If it has not updated after six weeks, contact your Finanzamt with your confirmation number.
One important note: changing your tax class does not change the total tax you owe for the year. It changes how much is withheld from your monthly salary. The final settlement happens in your annual tax return — if too much was withheld, you receive a refund; if too little, you pay the difference.

Can my employer change my tax class for me?
No. Your employer has no access to change your tax class. The change must be applied for by you — via Elster or at your Finanzamt. Your employer only receives the updated class passively through ELStAM once the Finanzamt has processed your application.
I got married this year — can I change tax class immediately?
Yes. Marriage is a qualifying life event and allows a tax class change outside the once-per-year voluntary limit. You can apply as soon as the marriage is registered. The monthly deadline still applies — submit before the 1st of the month you want the new class to take effect.
What if I miss the 30 November deadline?
Any application submitted after 30 November takes effect from 1 January of the following year. There is no way to backdate a tax class change. If you overpaid tax as a result of being in the wrong class, you can recover the excess through your annual tax return.
